Starting Oct. 9, Apple users will get to experience the new app-specific passwords feature that was earlier promised for launching. This new feature was supposed to launch on the first of the month. But because Apple attended to a few more important matters, the launch of the new feature was pushed to a later date. If you’re one of the users who were getting excited for this new feature, you will be pleased to know that it has already been made available by Apple.
In line with the launch of the new feature, Apple users received an email regarding the two-factor authentication system that will take effect with the launch. By using the new app-specific passwords feature, users will be able to log into applications that don’t use two-factor logins; among these include email clients and apps that wish to access iCloud data.
In order to use this feature, users will simply have to create their one-time-use password from the Apple ID website. As soon as the password has been created, users simply have to plug it into the app they would like to use. It’s as simple as that.
Users will get to experience an added layer of security on their devices simply because they won’t have to share their iCloud password with apps that require it. Instead, iOS users can revoke access from an app that tries to get the password to their iCloud account. By deleting the password, the app is stopped from trying to access their account. With the number of issues iCloud faced last month, this new feature Apple has provided will help give their users a sense of relief after all the attacks that users experienced last month.
Read below for the full email Apple sent out along with instructions on how you can use this new feature.
Dear User,
Thank you for using two-step verification to protect your Apple ID and the data you store with iCloud.
This is a reminder that starting tomorrow, app-specific passwords will be required to access your iCloud data using third party apps such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, or other mail, contacts, and calendar apps.
If you are currently signed in to a third party app using your primary Apple ID password, you will be signed out automatically when this change takes effect. You will need to generate an app-specific password and sign in again.
- To generate an app-specific password:
Sign in to My Apple ID (https://appleid.apple.com)- Go to Password & Security
- Click Generate App-Specific Password
