Best of 2014 apps

With 2014 about to come to a close, it is good to look back and recall the new experiences that filled the year.  For iOS users, this also means that this is the perfect time to look back at the best iOS apps of the year and whether or not they truly deserve their spot on the list.

As Apple reveals its best-selling games, apps, and other entertainment outlets of the year, it is good to see which of these actually made the cut.  Here are the most downloaded iOS apps of 2014, based on Apple’s findings:

First up, the Facebook’s Messenger iOS app gained recognition as the number one downloaded app under the “Top Free” category.  Considering the fact that Facebook removed its private chat function from its native Facebook app and everyone else was basically forced to download this app or not be able to use it at all, this does not really come as a surprise.  Still, can’t we get the old Messenger function in one app?

Meanwhile, on their “Top Paid” category, the iOS app that lead the ranking was the much enjoyed Heads Up! iOS app.  Apart from the fact that it continues to be a fun and exciting game, it really helped that the app was made popular on the TV show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

While these two contained different apps, Apple named Clash of Clans as the highest grossing app on both iPhone and iPad devices.  This led to the realization that, like last year, freemium games continue to top the charts.  Even with the option for in-app purchases, freemium games still make for a sure download.  As a matter of fact, 9 out of the top 10 grossing iOS apps were all freemium games for iPhone users (10/10 for iPad users).
