The Apple iPhone is an awesome and powerful device. However, Apple thought they should restrict the firmware from being able to accomplish certain task and run third party applications. The only way to unlock the full potential of your iphone so you may use and install custom applications, ringtones, etc, is to “jailbreak” the iPod, whereby you remove Apple’s firmware restrictions. Previously this required opening up the actual iPhone and voiding the warranty, but luckily with recent advances you can safely jailbreak your iPod with little to no computer experience, and your warranty will stay completely in tact! This is 100% safe, and there is no risk of damaging your iPod if you do it properly.
This has been one of the largest stigma’s about jailbreaking. People are under the impression that jailbreaking their device will destroy it. If not destroy the device, at least void the warranty. With the recent advances jailbreakers have made this is no longer the case. It is perfectly safe to jailbreak your device. If you should need to return your device to Apple for warranty issues simply restore the device to its original state through itunes.

There has also been a lot of confusion about tethered and untethered. What do these terms mean? Tethered simply means to have a jailbroken device you must run the jailbreaking software each time your device is turned off or rebooted. Though, its not a big deal. It is inconvenient. Untethered is just the opposite. Your jailbreak doesn’t get lost if your device is rebooted or turned off. This is the most favored jailbreak for most.
