Retro Style Gaming That Looks Great and Moves Slow
I recently reviewed the game 16bit trader, an old school looking adventure game for the iPhone. The main character is trying to seek revenge for the murder of his father by posing as a travelling trader.
The game screen opens with a map showing all the cities you can travel to within the region of the map you are in. There are towns, trading posts, and mines users can travel to and seek wealth and adventure. Most of the cities have a trading post where they sell items like food, supplies, leather, etc… The interesting thing is most of these cities have a different price rate for these items. This makes it pretty elementary as to how to earn money. Travel to a city where stuff sells low and buy it. Then travel to the another city where it sells higher and sell it and pocket the profit. That’s it plain and simple! However what makes it simple is also what makes it seem tedious and boring because, while this method of getting rich might be fun in real life, it’s boring in a video game. In video games I feel people want to get away from doing tedious tasks.
16bit trader also moves very slowly. It takes a long long time to get any kind of wealth build up because of the constant having to move from one town to another. Also the quests are text based so while it looks retro it also feels retro. Some might like it and some might not. I give it only half a recommendation on account of the fact that it just moves too slow for me to enjoy that much. But hey don’t take my word for it. Check it out if you are so inclined.
