According to multiple job listings posted by Apple, the company looks to be expanding Apple Pay outside of the US in places such as: Europe, the Middle East, India, and Africa. The job listing shows that Apple will be forming a team in London and a “Apple Pay Site Reliability Engineer” in China.
“The new London-based Apple Pay team will work to drive the roll-out of this technology across EMEIA by working with a variety of internal and external partners, including teams in the US where the product will first launch and the EMEIA organisation, as well as Issuers, payment networks and merchants across Europe,” states the listing.
It comes to no surprise Apple is expanding Apple Pay to places outside of the United States. But, this is the first time we’ve seen an official statement from the Cupertino based company. Being Apple, they’re known for secrecy. And there was no indication to when they would be expanding the service outside of the US, up until now.
The listing in China states: “The Apple Pay Site Reliability Engineering Team is hiring for multiple roles focused on the front line customer experience and the back end integration of Apple systems with our Network and Banking partners. As part of this follow-the-sun team, you’ll have peers based in Europe and the US, ensuring timely support for our US customers around the clock, and a positive work-life balance for you.”
Apple Pay has been fairly successful. With over 1 million credit and debit card registrations within the first 72 hours, and roughly 90% of all credit and debit cards being supported here in the US. Whole Foods has also mentioned that the service now accounts for 1% of all contactless payments, and McDonalds mentions Apple Pay now accounting for over 50% of all tap-to-pay payments.
