How to fix a water damaged iPhone or other iOS device

We are all guilty of using our devices around water whether it be a pool, beach, or toilet.  At some point you have put your iPhone at risk while using it is my best guess.  Many have had unfortunate events occur such as dropping the iPhone in water or knocking it off the sink into the toilet.  Whatever the case may be there are a few things you need to do immediately if this happens.  Do not wait long before following these steps below.  Be sure to watch our review of the iPhone 5 underwater below.

iPhone got Splashed with Water Slightly

If the device was only splashed and did not go under the water, a simple towel will be enough to dry it off.  First dry it inside the case as thoroughly asa you can before removing it from the case.  Removing the iPhone before drying the outside runs more of a risk that more water could get into the electric components of the iOS device.

After you feel the out side is dry remove the iPhone and dry with a soft and dry cloth.  You may want to be sure the inside part of the case is thoroughly dry before putting the iPhone back in to it.  Now if the iPhone was submerged under water you need to follow these steps below.

iPhone Submerged under water for few seconds

At no time try to turn the iPhone on or off.  If the device was on when it was submerged do not turn it off or plug it into a USB outlet of any kind, electric or computer.  This causes electric to flow through the circuits and could result in unnecessary damage.  Once the device has time to dry effectively turning it on/off will not matter.

Remove the iPhone from the case after the case has been dried effectively to keep more water from touching the iPhone.  Now place the iPhone into uncooked rice.  I recommend buy an entire packet large enough to place the iPhone into where it completely covers all sides if the device.  This needs to be allowed to dry inside the rice for a full 24 hours without removing.  Do not take the iPhone out to try it before 24 hrs has passed. Some people have used silica gel packs instead of rice.  These are the little white packets you see when you receive items in the mail.  The ones that have do no eat written all over them.  But these could be hard to find but some users may have access,  Either way rice will work just as good.

3.  If the device doesn’t work after following these steps you will need to take it back to Apple   store.  So you know if your device is under warranty. Do Not Try taking it back to Apple pretending something unknown happened.  They have detectors which tells them if it has water damage.  So always better to be safe then sorry.  Never know they may replace it anyway.

How To Prevent Water Damage

There are several cases out there which can protect your iPhone from water damage.  However, we have gone hands on with a couple of these and can recommend these with full confidence.  Check out our video review below for more information.
