Apple on Monday put out a press release confirming it took four million pre-orders of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the first 24 hours. This is double the amount of iPhone sales of the iPhone 5 withstanding 2 million pre-orders in 2012.
“iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are better in every way, and we are thrilled customers love them as much as we do,” quoted by the press release from Apple CEO Tim Cook. The four million pre-orders within the 24 hour threshold is a new record for Apple.
Last year, Apple sold 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c units on opening weekend. Noting that the iPhone 5s was not available for pre-order.
The new iPhones are in high demand and “exceeds the initial pre-order supply.” Tim Cook and Co notes that pre-orders now are scheduled for delivery in October, even though “a significant amount” will be delivered on Friday and throughout September.
Apple’s Retail Stores will also handle additional supply for walk-in customers trying to get their hands on the handsets. Their stores will be opening on Friday at 8am local time.
The company encourages customers to get to the store early, or order online and have it deliver to your home, or pick it up in store.
Including Apple, major carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint will have the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus available for in-store pickup this Friday. They will also be available to select Apple Authorized Retailers.
In addition to the September 20 launch in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the United Kingdom, the handset will be available on September 26 in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.
