Malware Strikes
iOS Malware Attack August 2014
iOS device users should be aware there is a malware floating about on bad repo’s. So we the ink thats where its been coming from. Due to so little known about this type of malware programers seem to be a bit baffled. They aren’t very knowledgeable about the topics and that really worries me. Someone out there knows about it or they wouldn’t be abler to create such a program.
If you remember several months back we prorated a malware to you called unflod. Unflod was directed at stealing the users Apple ID and password. Now some months later it appears this problem has grown to affect over 75,000 devices. Now a new malware named Adthief has been found to be stealing Ad revenue by swapping advertising identifiers. This has only happened on jailbroken devices.
Now I no the first thought some users are going to have is Jailbreaking opens your device up to these issues when thats furthest thing from the truth. Yes, this attack has come through Jailbroken devices because it attacks through tyne Cydia Substrate extension. In the first place, Cydia substrate isn’t amiable on Non-Jailbroken devices so they have to use the entrance to get inside to perform this swap they are doing. It’s estimated this malware has stolen around 22 million mobile ads. Now that’s some big money for those who aren’t aware. What I don’t understand is why cant they track down whose cashing the checks so to speak and find this thief.
At this time they are aware of a developer who calls himself Rover12421 and “zerofile” on social networks and forums. He has admitted to developing a prototype version but denies any hand in distributing the malware. In my opinion, thaT SHOULD BE enough to punish him. It seems the malware covers 15 different ad networks from US, China, and India with the biggest focus being in China. Many developers and companies depend on this revenue to stay afloat.
It seems the main problems and concerns are coming through non-reputable or pirating repo’s such as Insanelyi. So if you are pirating tweaks and using these repos I would stop immediately. I would completely restore my device from scratch. We have been discussing this issue for a couple days and many seem to feel just as I do about pirating being wrong. However, if you ares still on the fence if you don’t want your personal information stolen its a good time to get out of they pirating business I would think. Theres just stop many bad things going on around that way of jailbreaking. Besides thats not what jailbreaking is about any way.
Check out our video discussion below about the topic. Be sure to share it and thumbs up.
