Earlier this week, Apple announced the availability of their latest iOS 8.1 update. Along with this was the introduction of the much anticipated feature, Apple Pay. While it is still a fairly new concept, there are already plenty of retailers and iOS users who are both excited to make use of the feature. At the same time, there are those who question how safe this payment option will be. Considering Apple Pay makes use of Touch ID, it is relatively safe to assume that this will be a preferred payment option over credit cards.
If you are among the many who are looking forward to using Apple Pay, you will be pleased to know that the 2014 World Series will be using this iOS feature. Fans that will be attending Game One at the Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Tuesday can make use of their Apple Pay feature to purchase food and beverages from concession stands that have participated in Apple Pay’s NFC payments system. As earlier reported by Forbes, this touchless payment system is being worked out by both Apple Pay and MasterCard as a way to promote the new iOS feature.
Apart from Kauffman Stadium, the Major League Baseball Advanced Media arm has also stationed Apple Pay compatible POS terminals throughout San Francisco’s AT&T Stadium in anticipation of the upcoming games. These two stadiums are among the first major sporting venues that will be making use of the mobile wallet system presented by Apple, making them revolutionary in this new era of making mobile payments a reality.
“The ballpark experience lends itself well to simple, secure payments so fans get through concessions and back to the game quickly,” said Ed McLaughlin, MasterCard’s chief emerging payments officer. “We’re thrilled to partner with MLBAM to bring contactless acceptance to the 2014 World Series. Through our longstanding relationship with MLB and MLBAM we are constantly looking for opportunities to create enhanced fan experiences both in-stadium and online, whether that’s through advanced payment capabilities or delivering surprises to fans.”
Additionally, both MLBAM and Tickets.com are planning to incorporate an in-app purchase for tickets that have been processed via the online option of Apple Pay. With this system in place, iOS users will be able to purchase their tickets easily for the 2015 MLB Season.
