Free U2 Album
As a way of celebrating with last week’s launch of the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Tim Cook and U2 has announced that they will be giving away copies of their new album ‘Songs of Innocence’ automatically. Over 500 million iTunes users will receive the album on their libraries for free. Just last week, 2 million iTunes users downloaded the free album.
Despite this, plenty of users were unhappy with the album automatically added to their libraries. This paved way to plenty of complaints and confusion from users, which was enough for Apple to produce a dedicated support site on how users can permanently remove the album from their iTunes purchase history. According to Apple, users who remove the free album and later decide to get it back will have to download it again. The album will only be available for free until October 13. Afterwards, the controversial album will be available for sale at various retailers.
If you have received the free album on your library and you want to remove it, here is a short guide:
- Go to http://itunes.com/soi-remove.
- Confirm that you want to remove the album from your account by clicking on Remove Album.
- Sign in with your Apple ID and password that you use for your iTunes Store purchases.
- You will receive a confirmation message that the free U2 album was successfully removed from your account.
* If you have downloaded the songs on your PC or Mac and added them to your Music app, you will need to delete them manually.
While the album was offered free for iTunes users, Apple reportedly paid over $100M for rights of the release exclusively for its users. Apple announced the complimentary album through an email campaign along with a new ad. Sadly, they did not expect the response they received from the public. Even if the album was given away for free, users wanted to have more control over the music on their libraries. Perhaps Apple has more plans of working with the band in the future—as long as the public will be more open to it.
