Comex’s Announces A New Cydia Substrate May Be Coming Soon

Saurik

Comex has announced a replacement is coming salon for Cydia Substrate.  We have already heard a response from Saurik about this yesterday. However, what does this mean for jailbreakers.  Be sure to stay close to iPhonecaptain to be kept informed.  As soon as we hear news we will be passing it on here.

For anyone who may be unfamiliar with Comex he is the creator of the JailbreakMe Jailbreak.  This was the Jailbreak released back before iOS 5,

Comex has already released an alpha beta version of the new Cydia Substrate on his Github page and stated his motivations behind the project.  Comex states his goal for making this new Substrate is to have a much low level software as open as possible and currently the Cydia Substrate we use is not.  Here is some of the statements as taken from Github.

Jailbreaking is fundamentally about taking something closed and fixed and opening it up to hacking and modification: perhaps allowing a mess to be made, but quite possibly ending up with something unique and different. This ideal of openness is very similar to that of free software, and I therefore believe that it’s in the spirit of jailbreaking to make as much low-level stuff open as possible, both for inspection and modification by curious users (who, after gaining knowledge that way, might end up becoming quite valuable to the community). Polished tweaks that are sold commercially are one thing (although they too benefit from general openness, especially the ones with a lot of reverse engineering behind them, since the same reverse engineering can often support multiple use cases), but the underlying framework is another – especially since it’s free of charge, removing at least the most obvious motivation for closing source.

Saurik replied to Comex in a very long post we shared with you yesterday.

However, Saurik notes that he is running out of energy to fight against people who are not wanting to work together.  Saurik states that his greatest challenge currently is against the DCMA exemption and to keep jailbreaking legal.  However, Saurik did share some new ideas which he wants to bring to Cydia Soon and I’m sure like we all saurik speaking are ready for a new home page and such. He also stated their would be some new payment options added to Cydia as well.

I hope these two can bury the hatchet soon and work together.  I think it all boils down to Comex being jealous of Saurik having all control and benefits both monetary and development related for owning Cydia full rights.  From what I can gather they must have been friends early on when Cydia first started but Comex became overcome with jealousy when Saurik began getting recognized and wealthy.  How much in put Comex had to the start up of the company I could only speculate,.  So I hope we see this ending soon or I think its going to bring bad blood among others and maybe cause Cydia to be shut down.  What do you foresee coming?  Sound off in the comments below.
