How to Get Photo Camera Roll Back in iOS 8

My Camera Roll iOS app

While the iOS 8 software update promised a number of new additions and changes to iOS devices, it also removed one feature that its users have gotten quite accustomed to—Camera Roll. Along with the Photo Stream, Apple has transferred your photos to a different location. Once you’ve updated your device to iOS 8, you will discover that your photos have been segregated to Recently Added, Recently Deleted, and a few other albums that you have created.

Don’t worry though, your old photos aren’t gone forever. Instead, they have been transferred to the Photos tab on the bottom of your screen. You can view your photos based on when you took them. As for the new Recently Added folder, it pretty much stores your photos from the last 30 days.

If you miss Camera Roll, there’s an app you can use to replace it. Called My Camera Roll, you can relive your iOS 7 days on your device without reverting to the old software. The good thing about My Camera Roll iOS app is that it doesn’t simply add an album to your Photos app like other apps do. Instead, it operates independently in the sense that it gives access to a grid of thumbnails of the photos you have on your device. At the same time, it offers the same editing and sharing feature options that you once had with your Photos app in iOS 7.

While it does have an exact replica of the features available on the old Photos app, My Camera Roll doesn’t open the grid of thumbnails on your most recent photos. Instead, it opens from your oldest photos; making you have to scroll down to all the photos you took. One trick to avoid this is to keep the app open so that it will remember where you last left it. Once you close the app, however, you’ll have to start browsing through your oldest photos again.

According to its developer, ebork Developments, a fix is on the way to get rid of this issue. With the next update available, users of My Camera Roll will be able to access their grid starting from the most recent photos they took. A Today screen widget will also be available to let users view the photos they captured on the Notification Center’s Today screen.

Indeed, Camera Roll was just one of the features available on iOS devices that wasn’t highly praised. Not until Apple decided to remove it, people realized how much help it was. Oh well, it just takes some getting used to with the new features on Photos app.

Considering My Camera Roll iOS app costs $0.99 to download, you may have to think about whether or not you really need to get it. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices running on iOS 8.0 or later.
