Goodbye, iPod Classic

iPod-Classic-RIP-with-Text-630x354

It’s been nearly five years since the iPod Classic was updated.  Every two years we see an update on the iPod line,  for the last two iPod refreshes we did not see any mention of the iPod Classic.

And today it seems as though Apple has put the iPod Classic up in gadget heaven. Having it’s original debut in 2001,  Apple has updated the iPod Classic several times.  Up until today,  the company quietly removed the device from it’s online store. Only to assume that we will quietly be seeing them disappear in Apple’s Retail Stores. The iPod Classic was last updated on September 9, 2009.  Which,  if you look at it,  is decades in the gadget world.

While the iPod touch dominated iPod sales over the last couple of years.  Taking over 50% of total iPod sales,  it made much sense.  The iPod shuffle and nano are the new gadgets and that’s what the world wants.  The iPod Classic is simply too out dated.  It offered a ton of storage,  that was it’s selling point.  But we’re in the digital age now,  everything works in the cloud.

It also lacked a ton of features such as having a way to talk to the cloud.  It’s sad to see it go,  but Apple simply gave up on it.  There was no real reason to keep the iPod Classic around. Especially when the new iPhones offer up to 128GB of storage.

Goodbye iPod Classic,  you served the world well,  and you revolutionized the way we listened to music. R.I.P. iPod Classic 2001-2014.
