For iPhone devices that have a lock code, it can now take a few seconds to unlock the device with brute force. Taking inspiration from MDSec’s black box hardware, iOS jailbreak developer and hacker Majd Alfhaily developed his own tool to help simplify the process. With his curiosity for the brute for tool, he created his own system that improves the process of the first tool. Instead of taking about 40 seconds to run through each possible combination, Majd’s own tool does it in a fraction of its time.
Using an unsigned code, Majd’s tool can easily remove the lock code from jailbroken devices. Instead of the total 110 hours on MDSec’s tool, Majd’s tool will only take around 14 hours before all possible passcode combinations are tried out. This is because he was able to code the tool in a way that the device does not disable after encountering 10 bad passcode attempts. Using his code, the tool only needs five seconds (instead of 40) before a new attempt can be made.
Obviously, this tool could be used for illegal purposes and recognizing its existence will grow an awareness to protect devices with a more complex passcode. If you are a device user and fear that this tool may be used on your device, there’s plenty of time to change your passcode into a more complex one. This way, nobody will be able to get into your device if ever it falls in the wrong hands. While there’s still no guarantee of how secure a complex passcode could be, it will be a big help in such occasions. Just remember to keep your phone protected at all times so you can be assured that it won’t fall into someone’s prying arms.
What do you think about this new tool?
