Sideloading means installing an app from somewhere other than Apple’s App Store. On an iPhone or iPad, that can mean an eligible alternative marketplace or an IPA file installed with a signing tool. You do not need to jailbreak your device to use the methods below.
This beginner’s guide explains how to sideload apps on iPhone 17, iPhone 18 Pro and iPad, which method to choose, and how to keep your apps working. Researched October 10, 2026; based on current developer documentation, not hands-on testing of every device and OS combination.
What does sideloading mean on an iPhone?
Think of the App Store as the usual front door for installing apps. Sideloading uses another installation route. An IPA is an iPhone or iPad app package; downloading that file into Files does not install it. A compatible tool must sign and install it first.
Signing gives an app an identity your device can verify. Refreshing renews that authorization before it expires. Jailbreaking changes operating-system restrictions more broadly; it is a separate process. Sideloading also does not make an incompatible app work or unlock paid features automatically.
iPhone 17, iPhone 18 and iPad: check this first
Apple currently lists iPhone 18 Pro alongside iPhone 17 in its official iPhone lineup. Here, references to the iPhone 18 generation mean the available Pro models, not a claim that a standard iPhone 18 has been released.
Open Settings ? General ? About and note your model and iOS or iPadOS version. The software version, signing-tool release and app requirements matter more than the number printed on the box. For iOS 27 devices in particular, check the tool’s current compatibility notes before starting; broad “iOS 26+” support is not proof that every app works on every iOS 27 release.
- Back up your device and any important app data.
- Have your device passcode, Apple Account login and a reliable Wi-Fi connection ready.
- For desktop setup, use your own Mac or Windows PC and a data-capable USB cable.
- Download tools and IPA files from their developers. Avoid repackaged downloads with unclear origins.
Which sideloading method should you choose?
- Alternative marketplace: a straightforward option when your region and device qualify and the marketplace carries your app.
- AltStore Classic: install with a computer, then use desktop refreshing or set up Remote AltServers for on-device refresh.
- SideStore: computer-assisted initial setup, followed by installation and refresh using Wi-Fi and LocalDevVPN.
- Sideloadly: useful when you already have an IPA and want to install it from a Mac or PC.
Read the steps below for setup details and ongoing requirements.
Method 1: Install an alternative app marketplace
According to Apple’s current availability rules, the EU supports alternative marketplaces on iPhone and iPad, plus eligible direct web distribution. Japan and Brazil support alternative marketplaces on iPhone. Your Apple Account region and physical location must qualify. These regional options do not provide a general marketplace-install switch for U.S. users.
Here is the current AltStore PAL installation process, as an example:
- Use a supported browser on the eligible device and visit the marketplace’s official download page.
- Tap its download button and read the installation prompt.
- Open Settings. If prompted, select the authorization for that marketplace developer and allow it.
- Return to the download page and select Install App Marketplace.
- Open the marketplace, choose an available app and review its installation information before confirming.
AltStore PAL’s page currently specifies iOS/iPadOS 18.0 or later, but Apple’s regional device restrictions still apply. Marketplace apps undergo Apple’s baseline notarization; this is different from full App Store review. Contact the distributor for purchase and refund help. Do not confuse AltStore PAL with AltStore Classic: PAL is a marketplace, while Classic handles developer-signed sideloading.
Method 2: Sideload with AltStore Classic
This is a practical starting point if you have occasional access to a computer. Follow the official Mac instructions or Windows instructions for the latest downloads.
- Install AltServer. On Windows, follow its specific iTunes and iCloud requirements; its guide calls for Apple’s direct-download versions.
- Connect and unlock your device. Approve the computer trust prompt. Enable Wi-Fi syncing in Finder on a modern Mac or iTunes on Windows.
- Install AltStore. Open AltServer’s menu, choose Install AltStore and select your iPhone or iPad. Complete Apple Account authentication in the official tool.
- Trust your developer profile. In Settings ? General ? VPN & Device Management, select the profile associated with your own signing account. Follow the trust and restart prompts.
- Enable Developer Mode. Open Settings ? Privacy & Security ? Developer Mode, enable it and complete the restart and confirmation prompts.
- Install your first app. Open AltStore, sign in if requested and install an app from Browse. For a developer-provided IPA, use the add/import control in My Apps and choose the file.
The newer option: refresh without returning to your computer
The September 14, 2026 AltStore Classic 2.3 release added Remote AltServers and raised the minimum iOS version to 17.4. AltStore documents Remote AltServers. In Classic’s settings, start remote-server setup and follow its pairing instructions. Install LocalDevVPN when directed, connect it, and join Wi-Fi. Once configured, you can install and refresh on the device without connecting to your desktop AltServer. Cellular alone is not supported by this documented workflow.
If you keep the traditional desktop route, leave AltServer running and reachable when refreshing. In My Apps, use the refresh control and confirm that the expiry counter increases. Background refresh is helpful, but check it before a trip. See AltStore’s Getting Started guide.
Method 3: Set up SideStore on iPhone or iPad
SideStore’s current prerequisites specify iOS/iPadOS 15 or later, a passcode, Wi-Fi and a computer for initial installation. Its documented setup uses iloader and LocalDevVPN, rather than older instructions built around a manually configured WireGuard tunnel.
- Install LocalDevVPN using the App Store link in SideStore’s guide. Approve its VPN configuration and connect it.
- Install iloader from the official guide’s link, following the instructions for your computer’s operating system.
- Connect and unlock your iPhone or iPad, then trust your computer.
- In iloader, authenticate with your Apple Account, select the correct device and choose the stable SideStore installation.
- On the device, trust your own account’s developer profile in VPN & Device Management. Complete any restart prompts, then enable Developer Mode under Privacy & Security.
- With Wi-Fi and LocalDevVPN connected, open SideStore and use the same signing account.
- In My Apps, refresh SideStore itself first by tapping its expiry counter. After that succeeds, import your chosen developer-provided IPA through the app’s add/import control.
The official SideStore installation walkthrough explains version-specific prompts. Keep LocalDevVPN connected whenever installing, updating or refreshing. Its local connection supports communication with the device; it is not a service for changing your country. An OS update or reset can invalidate pairing and require repair.
Method 4: Install an IPA with Sideloadly
Sideloadly works from macOS or Windows and supports iPhone and iPad. Its website advertises iOS 26+ support; consult current release information for your exact OS build.
- Download Sideloadly from its official website. Windows users should follow its listed Apple software requirements.
- Connect the unlocked device by USB, approve computer trust and select it in Sideloadly.
- Drag your developer-provided IPA into Sideloadly.
- Enter the Apple Account used for signing, start installation and complete the authentication prompts.
- Trust your own developer profile on the device and enable Developer Mode if required, then launch the app.
- For automatic refresh, enable the app’s refresh option and keep the Sideloadly daemon running on your computer. The device must be reachable by USB or configured Wi-Fi syncing.
The Sideloadly FAQ explains refresh and pairing. Automatic refresh still depends on the computer being available; installing once does not make a free signature permanent.
How is sideloading different on an iPad?
For the desktop-signing methods, select your iPad instead of your iPhone and follow the same account, trust and refresh steps. Confirm that the IPA supports iPadOS and your hardware. An iPhone-only app may have a limited layout, and some apps will not run at all.
For regional marketplaces, remember the distinction: Apple’s current EU rules include iPad, while its Japan and Brazil marketplace availability lists iPhone. A marketplace being available on your phone does not automatically make it available on your tablet.
Why do sideloaded apps expire after seven days?
With a free signing account, these developer-signed apps generally need refreshing within seven days. The usual limit is three active sideloaded apps, including SideStore or AltStore Classic when installed this way. There is also an App ID allowance, which is separate from the active-app limit. See the SideStore FAQ for details.
Check the expiry counters regularly. A paid Apple Developer account can extend signing duration, but you do not need one to begin. These personal-signing limits are different from the rules for apps installed through an authorized regional marketplace.
Common sideloading problems and what to check
- Untrusted Developer: verify that the profile belongs to the account you used, then complete its trust prompts.
- Developer Mode is missing: complete initial device pairing and installation first, then check Privacy & Security again. Consult the tool’s current troubleshooting guide if it remains unavailable.
- Refresh cannot connect: use Wi-Fi and LocalDevVPN for SideStore or Remote AltServers. For desktop refresh, make sure the computer and signing tool are available.
- Maximum apps or App IDs reached: check your free-account allowance. Removing an app does not necessarily free its App ID immediately.
- An installed app crashes: confirm its OS requirements and whether it needs JIT, a separate execution feature used by some emulators. Successful installation does not guarantee JIT support.
- A previously working app expired: refresh or reinstall through the original signing method. Back up its data before deleting anything.
Frequently asked questions
Can I sideload without a computer?
Eligible regional marketplaces install directly on the device. SideStore’s documented main setup uses a computer initially; its later refreshes do not. AltStore’s Remote AltServers also support on-device use after setup. Avoid assuming that a “no computer” claim means no setup, no signing limits or universal compatibility.
Can I just download an APK or IPA in Safari?
Android APK files do not install on iPhone or iPad. An IPA download normally needs a compatible signing tool; authorized web distribution is a different, region-dependent installation process.
Does sideloading require a jailbreak?
No. The four methods described here work without jailbreaking. Older jailbreak tutorials and version-specific permanent-signing exploits should not be treated as instructions for a new iPhone.
What should I install first?
