At CES 2014, some of the coolest technological developments have been introduced to the public. Among the innovative products that have gained the attention of the public is the new iRing, created by an international music technology company called IK Multimedia. Recognizing the need to innovate a motion controller, the iRing introduces itself as one for use on music apps on iOS devices.
Demonstrated during CES 2014, the device comes with a pair of identical double-sided ring controllers. Through this, the user is able to make use of the series of control combinations that are available along with the iRing. Using the device on both hands, users are able to perform up to six actions that have already been programmed on the device.
Detecting actions through the built-in camera on the iOS device, the iRing is able to distinguish a particular command. The camera is able to recognize the position of the dot patterns on the iRing. And as a response to these positions, the camera translates the movement into MIDI data. With this sort of information, the user is able to interact with their chosen music app.
Along with simple hand movements, the user is able to communicate with their iOS device and convert these actions into music commands. Without touching the iOS device, iRing users can easily operate their music app and create music the easiest way they can. The best part about the iRing is that it translates actions in real time so users are guaranteed that their movements are recognized.
As part of the iRing device, there are two free apps that are recommended by the app developer: the iRing Music Maker and the iRing FX/Controller. Each app comes as a free download from the App Store and is compatible with devices running on iOS 6.1 or higher.
The iRing Music Maker app makes use of the device’s camera for the controller. A simple wave of the hand can already perform certain actions such as controlling rhythmic elements, change beats, control effects, play synth parts, and many more. Meanwhile, the iRing FX/Controller app has been developed for professional musicians and DJs who wish to create a more customized MIDI control setup. Through this app, MIDI messages can be transmitted to other compatible apps that operate on such devices.
Other uses for the iRing controller include gaming, utilities, health & fitness, and many more apps. As of this writing, IK Multimedia is inviting third-party app developers to partner with their device through a free SDK (Software Development Kit) and licensing program. For more information regarding this, visit the iRing product website.
Priced at $24.99, the iRing is available in three different colors: white, grey, and green. You may purchase the product from the IK Multimedia website or from music and electronic retailers nearest you.
