The Best Free “Mac Preview” Alternatives for PDF Reading

?Mac’s Preview app is built-in with every laptop of the Apple series and it comes with a variety of features for viewing and basic editing. It is suitable for both images and documents, but even though that it offers PDF support – it is quite basic and there’s much more to ask for.

?

?It looks like that most basic applications that come built-in the Mac are limited with their features. Sooner or later, you want to do something more complex and you need to look for an alternative.

?That’s why we decided to do research on Preview alternatives and we came up with some interesting results.

I. Skim

?Skim is one of the most sophisticated PDF readers and Preview alternatives that we often recommend to our readers. It comes with all the necessary features, while its performance is top notch.

?The software was created for academic purposes and it has the important option to annotate documents. This allows you to add & edit notes, highlight text and so much more.

?Moreover, you can create document snapshots for reference, view documents in presentation mode and much more. All of this comes in a lightweight and easy-to-use interface.

II. Foxit Reader

?Currently, one of the most popular applications for PDF viewing is the Foxit Reader. Due to the fast performance, simplistic layout and feature-rich interface, the software has quickly risen in popularity and it has become a preferred choice to many.

?Arguably the best viewing experience for PDF documents is delivered by Foxit Reader. It comes with a tabbed interface, which is suitable when you’re dealing with lots of documents.

III. Acrobat Reader DC

?Adobe’s Acrobat Reader was the standard for PDF reading for a long time. Ever since it was released with the format, the PDF reader was troubled with numerous issues such as security vulnerabilities and slow performance. However, things have changed in recent years and Adobe has put in the efforts to stabilise the software.

?In fact, the Mac version is particularly clean and lightweight. Similar to Foxit, Acrobat has a tabbed interface, suitable for viewing multiple pages. What makes the Acrobat Reader DC special is the “Document Cloud” feature, which allows you to store files securely on their servers and access them anywhere.

?If you’re not content with the free features, you can upgrade for $15 to the Pro version.

Paid PDF Solutions for Mac

?Let’s say that you are looking for a software that takes the experience to another level when it comes to editing. For this, you will need to increase your budget and spend some cash on a more complex application.

?iSkysoft PDF editors come in two versions: standard and professional. With the standard, you can scan, annotate, add passwords, compress PDfs and watermark files. The professional version comes with a variety of conversion options, access limitations, OCR for scanned documents and much more.

?PDFStudio is another paid option that offers a great bundle of features. Their professional version comes with digital signatures, batch processing feature, file optimizations, splitting & merging files, etc.

?Last but not at least comes our personal favourite – Soda PDF. Not only that their paid versions come with many features, but most of the things are available in their free web version.
