Yahoo ESports Review

Broadcasting and watching gameplay is a global phenomenon, arguably, one created by the streaming platform Twitch, recently acquired by Amazon for the best part of $1bn, a bargain if you ask me. What Twitch created and what has generated so much revenue for TV, was ESport as the one-off, must-watch live event. So successful has Twitch been in promoting ESports as a spectator sport that it now has over 55 million visitors each month and in excess of 600,000 people generating content.

In 2015 the global audience for ESports was estimated at more than 226 million and in March of this year bwin reported a 312% increase in bets compared to 2015. In 2015 the NFL Super Bowl became the most watched programme in American TV history, with an average of 114 million viewers tuning in. In 2017 it’s estimated that over 335 million people will watch the best gamers in the world go head to head.

ESports

ESports are starting to make football look like a minority interest. No surprise then that Yahoo have followed up their launch of the ESports content site with their ESports app. With so much ESport on offer, this free app is a fan’s dream. You can watch real time tournaments, breaking news and highlights. You can trawl match stats, team stats and player stats to your heart’s content. You can set notifications easily by visiting a competitor’s detail page: you tap their icon inside of a match and then tap the follow button.

The card based interface is a dream to browse and allows you to leave comments on news stories or edit your notification configurations. The app delivers video highlights with expert commentary, detailed tournament analysis and tips on competitive strategy as well as stats and updates for all MOBA’s, shooters and fighting games. There’s little doubt in my mind that this app is going to be huge because right now ESports seem unstoppable. Just consider the stats for 2016 so far: 1962 tournaments, 8565 players and over $58 million in prize money. This app is Twitch for your mobile, before long you won’t be able to take your eyes off it.
