At some point we’ve all thought we should do our bit for charity. We’ve all walked straight past the man in the street asking us to help the aged. We’ve all ignored the TV adverts that have tugged at our heartstrings but not enough so we pick up the phone. But no could be just the right time to pick up the phone. But rather than dial, head straight to the App Store.
Over the last few years charities and organisations have been getting incredibly inventive with new ways of raising money for good causes, and in many cases, you don’t even have to spend a penny.
Feedie
Love heading out for food? Love taking images of said food and posting on Instagram or Facebook? Then download Feedie and get snapping. In partnership with The Lunchbox Fund, the app encourages you to take photos of your meals and for every image taken, the participating restaurant will donate a meal to the Fund.
So far over 12 million meals have been donated, so don’t only feed yourself, but feed the world too.
Donate a Photo
It’s no surprise to see plenty of companies using images to raise funds for charity, and this one comes from Johnson & Johnson. Simply share a photo with the free to download app and for every image, $1 will be donated to a charity of your choosing, ranging from feeding families in less advantaged countries, to renovating parks, to providing students the help to start certain careers.
Budge
If you’re like us then you’ll love challenging your friends. But why not make some money for a good cause in the process?
Budge allows you to challenge your friends to anything, from marathons, to poo sticks, with the loser having to make a donation to a worthy cause. It’s a free to download app and not only raises money for charity, but is also the encouragement you need to get one over on your friends.
Play to Cure: Genes in Space
The battle against cancer has just gone universal with this mobile app supported by the Rational Group. Everyone loves to play games on their smartphone, so why not combine that with the chance to help accelerate cancer research.
It’s free to download and is a fun, simple game to play as well as being one of the most interesting ideas to grace the app store.
My Life as a Refugee
Developed by the UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, the app gives you the real world experience of fleeing from conflict or persecution. Based on three real-life situations that include a young lady expecting a child, a 15-year-old boy, and a women’s rights activist, it aims to raise awareness of the troubles going on in some countries, and is certainly an eye-opening app for those wishing to discover more.
One of the most unique apps on the market, it certainly raises awareness of what refugees face on a daily basis.
