Apple last week announced some ground-breaking new plans for their soon-to-be released iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smart devices. Apple’s mantra of sticking to small displays has seemingly washed away, as they plan to introduce 4.7” and 5.5” screens to their phones, with the plus getting the larger of the two size variants.
Apple also introduced ‘Metal’, which is a technology that will expand on the developments the iOS platforms have already made, in order to boost and enhance the power and efficiency on iPhone and iPad powered games. The technology essentially allows developers to access and unleash more of the iPhone’s capabilities than ever before, leading to more sophisticated software.
Epic, Disney, EA, and CD Projekt Red were revealed to have all pledged their support to the technology during Apple’s keynote speech on the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, which is a major boost to the App Store’s selling power when you consider some of the games that the developers currently offer for both PC and console gaming.
This brings us conveniently onto the actual playing of the games on the iPhones and with so many new developments set to be launched, which games should you download first? Well, after trialling and testing a vast array of the games on the various app stores and marketplaces, we have found the best of the bunch that should be considered before Apple make their dramatic overhauls.
Full Tilt

Available on the app store for pretty much all iPhones – even the ones still operating on iOS5.0 – is the Full Tilt app. This app is ground-breaking for poker, not least because the app is specifically designed for card playing and not a multi-aspect sportsbook, casino and poker application that you may find from many renowned bookmakers. Instead, this app unleashes some enthralling graphics and doesn’t try too hard to capture your attention – it simply lets you play poker in the format you desire and leaves the rest up to you. It even allows users to play the Rush game variant, which has seen a great deal of success since debuting in 2010. The game mode is almost a speed-run of sorts through a game of poker and it offers users a different dimension to their poker playing ability. The app also caters to users who have as little or as much time to play their favourite card game, as they can stick to usual poker, or play the aforementioned rush game mode if they are pressed for time, on a short journey for example. This app also offers a free play mode, which is essential.
Swing Copters
Dong Nguyen is back with his latest addictive brain-busting game that will likely once again send users into device-destroyer mode. Following on from Flappy Bird – which he later removed from the app store because he claimed it was too addictive – Swing Copters is essentially the same game, only harder. Instead of flying a bird in between Super Mario-styled piping, you must now take flight in a helicopter and avoid the plethora of swinging hammers the plague your ascent. For every set of hammers you pass, you get a point. In short, if the game would be ‘Swing hammers and a copter’, the game would pretty much explain itself.
All-Star Quarterback
What better way to celebrate the recent start of the new NFL season than to download this free-to-play, American football game? Essentially, you live the high life as a player positioned in one of the team’s integral roles; the quarterback position. Play well to earn yourself game time and most importantly, the big bucks, then spend it lavishly while enjoying the team’s match-winning success. In-app purchases are available, but they are likely only for the most addicted of users. Either way, as the NFL begins to take shape, there is no better time than now to become a quarterback.
