One of my favorite features of Yosemite and iOS 8 is definitely Continuity. This is what Apple refers to being able to make and receive calls right on your Mac. However, there are a few things which need to be in order before this can happen. We are going to walk you through all of those now below.
How to Make and Receive Phone Calls on Your Mac
Setup
- You must be signed into the same Apple iCloud account on both the iPhone and the Mac.
- Both the iPhone and Mac must be on same WiFi connection
- The iPhone must be running iOS 8 or later and the Mac must be running Yosemite
- iPhone Cellular Calls must enable on iPhone( Settings > FaceTime)
- iPhone Cellular Calls must be enabled on the Mac(FaceTime > Preferences)
When you receive a call it will be routed to your Mac from your iPhone. You can still answer using the iPhone if you like or just click “accept” on the Mac screen when the call comes in or you can choose “reject”. If you choose to accept the call on the Mac you will carry on the conversation using the Mac’s microphone and speakers.
In order to make calls launch the FaceTime app, select the audio tab, and enter a name, email, or phone number of the contact you want to call. As long as the number is in the contact card you will see a small phone icon next to their name. Click on it and you’ll find options available – Call using iPhone will be one of the options followed by the contacts phone numbers.
SMS messages can also be used from your iPhone to the Messages app on your Mac. When you reply back they will be converted back to SMS and sent along to the intended recipient.
Disabling The Continuity Feature
If you find this feature to be aggravating while your truing to work simply turn off the iPhone Cellular Calls on the iPhone, Mac, or both.
iPhone – To disable receiving call on Mac turn off iPhone Cellular Calls by going to Settings > FaceTime >Toggle Off the iPhone Cellular Calls option.
Mac – open FaceTime app go to FaceTime > Preferences. Click Settings and deselect the iPhone Cellular Calls option.
