We all know Passbook wasn’t a huge success.  It was a software implementation that was missing the hardware.  With Passbook, vendors were required to have new hardware to accommodate the new software.  Apple Pay, on the other hand is Apple’s second go at the mobile payment industry.

Apple Pay utilizes the already popular NFC payment method to pay for items.  This is key as Apple Pay uses a payment method that’s already been fully developed and is vastly used all across the country.  Tim Cook and Co. can deny it all they want, but Apple Pay works anywhere there’s an NFC terminal available.  It also works online.

How to setup and use Apple Pay

Step 1: Launch Passbook or the Settings app.  (If you’re launching the settings app, go ahead and go to the Passbook and Apple Pay section of the settings. It should be under iCloud and iTunes/App Store.)

Step 2: Fill out your credit or debit card information.  Note: you can use the camera to scan the front and back sides of your physical card.

Step 2a: The credit or debit card issuer may ask you to verify your identity by sending a verification code to your phone. Follow suite if necessary.

Step 3: Accept Apple’s Terms of Service and continue.  You should now be able to utilize Apple Pay.

Step 4: Walk up to any NFC terminal, and hover (not tap) your phone over the terminal, your phone should automatically detect that you’re using Apple Pay and load up your default card.

Step 5: Use Touch ID to authenticate.  This may take several seconds for your phone to authenticate the transaction.

And you’re done, you have successfully setup and paid using Apple Pay.  Using Apple Pay for online payments should be similar to paying via PayPal.  Apple Pay will be an option on supported third-party apps, and simply use Touch ID to authenticate and you should be good.

Does your bank support Apple Pay yet? And will it?

It’s also worth noting that Apple Pay works on iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 (for online payments), and iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus for physical NFC-based purchases.  Apple Pay requires iOS 8.1 or higher.
